Making Dorothy Gale's
Gingham Dress

Picture
The original costume worn by Judy Garland as the character Dorothy Gale from the film Wizard of Oz

Please be aware that we do not make costumes to sell or hire

Using Simplicity 4136 We made the dress up, exactly as the instructions with one or two minor alterations.

Material:

2 metres blue Gingham
4 large white buttons
Strip of white velcro
Approximately 10 medium snap fasteners
1.1/2 metres blue Ric-rac
2 metres white cotton fabric

Putting the bodice together.
Picture
.
Having joined the bodice to the waistband and the waistband to the skirt. The diagonally cut section was added to the bottom. Then finally the bottom of the skirt. The back is then sewn together, but leaving approximately 8" below the waist line open.

Picture
.
The hem of the skirt can now be turned up.
Picture
.
The straps are added, with a button at the end of each strap front and back. The strap has catching stitiches on the top of the bodice front and back to stop the straps from slipping down.

Picture
.
When I first made the pinafore, I used hooks and eyes on the centre back opening, but weren't very happy with them, so I took them off and put snap fasteners on instead.

Picture
.
I made the sleeves exactly as in the pattern instructions.
Picture
.
I made up the blouse as per the instructions.

Picture
.
I wanted to add a petticoat so it would be all in one. So I pleated a simple skirt onto the bottom of the blouse and attached the petticoat to the blouse .

Picture
.
I decided to use velcro on the opening, which extended down onto the petticoat, just to make it faster to get in and out of.

And this is the completed costume. Instructions for the wig, shoes and basket are in the wig section of this tutorial.
This is the only costume we have made so far, that was produced just from the pattern supplied.
